  • In this video, I react for the first time to Pentatonix performing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, the Queen classic. In this video, I analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. It was magical to witness one of the best songs of all time through the lens of one of the best a Capella groups of all time!

    If there's a RUclips creator who can react, analyse, explain, entertain, share love and good vibes, and make someone's day in one video, all at the same time, it's Lolli.
    If you want to hear Kirsten, Mitch, and Scott's raw unpolished (yet phenomenal) voices, you just have to watch Superfruit's Frozen Medley (they were called Superfruit before they turned into Pentatonix with the rest of the guys). It's a zero production one take vi, and it's just fun and laughter, especially the bloopers at the end. It's 100% worth (needed actually) checking.

      Umm...not sure what you mean by "they were SF before they turned into PTX" but they were Pentatonix before Scott and Mitch began their vlog they called Superfruit as a side project after Pentatonix began to recover from losing the original recording contract and gaining a new one with Madison Gate.

    I’ve heard a lot of great reactions to this cover by PTX, but this is by far my favorite. I loved hearing you break down the parts, and appreciate each of their contributions. I think you’re the only person who I’ve seen review this who mentioned that the guitar solo includes harmonics by Scott and Kirstie, which I agree, really sells the realistic guitar sound, That and Mitchie bending his vocals like a string. Hearing this live is mind-blowing. They like to use it for their final encore. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this fantastic reaction!

    The megaphone is a prop in the most literal sense of the word. There is a video of them doing this song live, no megaphone and sounds exactly the same. The shooting stars are a tribute to Dr. Brian May, astrophysicist and guitarist extraordinaire. Just more PTX goodness which you can never have enough of.

    Pentatonix bohemian rhapsody insights
    . So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, the four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, and the overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. -The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. -Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. -The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on RUclips, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing. Also when Brian Mays heard it..he posted it on his web site with the word "enjoy"

    Regarding the wind noise you speak on at 4:46, I'm about 85% sure that that is Avi and it isn't dubbed in after. I'm pretty certain he has mastered the ability to sing bass notes with his throat/mouth/tongue and make wind noises with his lips/teeth at the same time, similar to his ability to do Mongolian Throat Singing. Another instance you can see/hear him at this is in Pentatonix's Daft Punk Medley, around the 1:57 mark; there you can clearly see his lips formed for the wind noise and see his larynx moving like he's hitting his bass notes.

    Late to the party here, but I love your reaction! One thing you pointed out that I totally agree with is how full these five people make this song sound. When they competed on The Sing-Off, one of their competitors, the Dartmouth Aires, include this in an excellent Queen medley. They only did the Scaramouche section, but even with 16 members, they didn’t sound nearly as good. One of the Aires’ biggest issues was a notable lack of a strong low end, so they couldn’t get the fullness that Avi’s powerful bass gives PTX here.

    Fantastic informative reaction! I love the 'Grassi guitar' - the megaphone is just a prop though for the video, Mitch sings the guitar solo live just with his voice and it sound sjust as good! I really think they should have won a Grammy for this one. It is one of the best a cappella arangements ever in my opinion. Brian May thinks so too. He posted it on his socials when it came out with just one word 'Enjoy'. They waited six years before doing this one because they wanted to do it justice. They are just aliens from the planet vocal genius! I love them all but I'll be a Mitch fan for live. I've been a Pentaholic since they started in 2012 but only managed to see them live for the first time in May this year in London and they were phenomenal. In nearly 40 years of going to concerts I've seen some amazing artists but none of them were a patch on PTX live. I think the fact they are so close and Mitch Scott and Kirsty have known each other since they were 8-10 years old and sang in high school together is what makes them so in sync. They were born to sing together - along with Kevin and now Matt. Matt had big shoes to fill in Avi but he has been brilliant. I would really recommend some of their original music - it's very underrated. Their brand new song I Rise is amazing and really anthemic!

    These guys are just flippin amazing alien unicorns! It took them 5 years to feel ready to do this song and to do it the justice that it deserves. They are all massive Queen fans. Brian May, lead guitarist from Queen, heard this song when it came out and posted a link to his socials with the one word comment 'Enjoy!' I feel like that is giving Queen's Seal of Approval right there!
    They also inserted a lot of references and easter eggs into this video in tribute to the original video - which by the way, if you haven't seen - you should probably check it out! Queen couldn't perform this song live because of all the layering they did in post! And not only can Pentatonix do this Live, but the Mitch Grassi Guitar has no need for a Megaphone. Mitch just saw it lying around the set and decided to use it to draw attention to who was doing the guitar solo part - the megaphone was not on, Mitch can do this live!
    The couch is in reference to their beginning videos where they recorded themselves on various of theirs couches to post onto RUclips after they were dropped by Sony because they didn't think that Acapella would be popular enough to sell records. It is also a tip of the hat to Wayne's World movie scene with the car and head banging to this song which brought in a whole new generation to Queen's music!
    The part where Mitch is laying on the couch is in reference to Freddie's death and the members walking alongside are his coffin's Pallbearers. A lot of the visuals in here are in tribute to the original video's trippy graphics; like when they all line up and do the 'oh, oh, oh's' one after the other, and also when they line up behind Kirstie standing on the couch only to fan out behind her with their vocal parts.
    The shot of the sky is in tribute to Dr. Brian May who is Queen's lead guitarist and also an astrophysicist! Each shooting star represents a member of Queen. When they all collapse onto the couch with the shot from above is a homage to the cover art of Queen's record 'Sheer Heart Attack'
    Also I am pretty sure, Mitch is a reincarnation of Freddie Mercury - one...he can grow the Freddie Stash and looks so much like Freddie that it is kinda creepy - two...he can sing just as high if not higher than Freddie could - and three...Freddie died 8 months before Mitch was born!

    You have a wonderful ability to lead us down a path that shares the technical creativity that creates the music, and to share your emotions and emotional responses at the same time. At some point in my life, I realized that the power of art is to evoke emotional responses within people. Be it cinema, music, poetry, visual art, dance, etc, we all have the capacity to allow art to help us connect with emotions within us.
    I believe that this is why so many actors and musicians end up with stalkers, since the stalker is not able to separate their emotional response to the art from the actor/artist who is creating the art.

    I’ve just finished all of your pentatonix reactions… first channel I’ve subscribed to in over a year. Your love of the music…the depth of knowledge… the pure reactions. Love this so much. You seem to feel what I feel when I hear these songs. Thank you for what you do 🙏🏻.

    I'm writing this a year after you recorded this, but. I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed watching your reaction to the video. Your energy, your voice, your humor, everything was so fun. I suffer from depression and have had a very difficult week. Thank you for making me laugh out loud. Keep doing what you're doing, and know that you make a difference to a sad old lady.

    Most EXCELLENT reaction! (Personally, I love a reaction video from someone who knows music and its characteristics.)
    It’s a pleasure to hear your reactions to PTX.
    And you are so spot on about Kirstin! An amazing soloist who provides richness and support, free of ego. She’s incredible.

    Great reaction and analysis! I never noticed before who is doing exactly what in the background. I have been waiting for you to do more Pentatonix, thank you. I think you would really enjoy The Prayer and hearing them live. The Popspring concert has three original songs and their Micheal Jackson Medley. Hope to see more Pentatonix analysis in the future. Editing to add: The video Recording of Evergreen shows how they recorded their last album, I think you would enjoy that, too!

    I love watching your reactions! Your enjoyment of the music is a joy to watch, and I've learned so much about music from watching your commentary. In addition to the information about the notes and the singer's techniques, it has really helped me understand and appreciate the level of detail and sophistication in PTX"s arrangements. No matter how stunning their voices are, without the arrangements they gift us with, they would never have become as well known (or as enjoyable) without the geniuses behind the arrangements. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of music with such unmitigated joy and vulnerability!

      I second this! I was just scrolling to see if anyone suggested it yet, otherwise I would have. Another example of Mitch doing things with his voice that normally is produced in a studio.

    you might want to react to their most recent release was “Kiss From a Rose (Live Performance) Vevo” which I have watched 100+ times in the 2 weeks it has been out. This tour de force highlights their ability to mix what appears to be totally independent sounds but they fit perfectly, it also is the best example of Kevin’s amazing cello abilities other than his solo “Down” performance.

    Great reaction!!! I love their cover... did you notice that the second guitar solo (17:06), originally strummed by Brian May - is where they pay homage to Brian by showing the meteor shower??? Brian May is an astrophysicist and this acapela voice salute to Brian and the videos tip of the hat is brilliant!

    Oooh, yeah. I love that you mentioned Mitch's vocal agility. It's one of my favorite things about his singing. If you want what I think is the best example of that agility being tested to the limit and passing with flying colors, try their cover of "Gold" by Kiiara. Kiiara has to use computers to do what PTX, with Mitch in the lead on that one, do with just their voices.

    They did the Panning because that was exactly what Queen did for the ORIGINAL! And if you watch again, you will see that Avi made the wind sound while they recorded it, NOT after in Post production. By the way, the megaphone was JUST a prop. When they sing it live Mitch doesn't use anything except his voice! 🎶🎶👱‍♀👱‍♀👗👗👠👠❤❤

    • @YnEoS10
      @YnEoS10 Год назад +2

      You can hear a little bit of extra distortion added here compared to the live versions (maybe not with a literal megaphone, but something added in post to push it a little bit further.)

    • @shanialover
      @shanialover Год назад +1

      @@YnEoS10 People, including vocal coaches that have heard this as well as LIVE with no prop, have said they sound IDENTICAL! That is why it is just a prop, just like the flashlights ONLY the megaphone is doing nothing that the live version doesn't have. 👱‍♀👱‍♀👗👗👠👠❤❤

    • @tor_sgith
      @tor_sgith Год назад +1

      Kevin has said in an interview that they added a little distortion to the studio recording of Mitch at that point to make him sound more guitar-like, but they can probably add that live too, just like you can add it to an actual guitar when played live.

    I just found Fairy voice Mother today and LOVE her analysis of PTX!!! I saw PTX in concert in Arlington, Texas some years ago and they are magical FVM! Kirsti, Scott & Mitch have been singing together since junior high & this explains a lot about how they work so well together. You may already know they got their start after winning the 'Sing Off' competition. I would love to see FVM react to PTX doing 'Dog Days Are Over' by Florence and the Machine. This song was chosen for them by the Sing Off judges and you can see Pentatonix is extremely focused and adept at arranging songs to perfection. Please make this Texas PTX fan happy by reacting to Dog Days Are Over... Please! They are my absolute favorite singing group and so well worth hearing over & over. Also a new fan of you FVM!
